Calypso for Kids Overview
Multicultural Assembly
This assembly is centerd around West Indian culture. It is an amusing musical tour of the Caribbean. The content includes history, geography and musicology. Students are encouraged to listen by being told that they will have to answer questions in order to be up front and participate. This program is available as a solo as well as with a band.
Concerts
As a concert, Calypso for Kids is a great adddition to family, music or arts festivals. This 90-minute show engages both children and parents alike. Kids find themselves the center of attention in songs like “Brown Gal in the Ring” and “Day-O.” In typical calypso fashion, other songs teach a lesson. “When You’ve Got a Heart You Can See” reminds us that as we begin to see with our hearts, we will see how similar we all really are.
Residencies
Jamaica Bob is available to come to schools to assist teachers in teaching these fun and interesting styles of music. During these residencies teachers gain a better understanding of the history of the music and simple but effective ways to integrate it into other disciplines.
